What effects does gestational diabetes have on a baby?

I am 32 weeks & 4 days pregnant, I just took my 1 hour sugar test at my results before the drink (while fasting) was 91 & after the drink was 161.

I was told at first that, that was to be expected being as I had, had the drink by the lab tech. The doctor notified me later & told me that my sugar level was too high & that it shouldn’t be over 138. So now they want me to come in for a 3 hour test. Kind of has me scared. My baby was already measuring the size & weight of a full term baby (6 lbs. 8 oz.). . .about 3 weeks early.

My first baby weighed 9 lbs. & 3 oz., but my test results were normal with him (I know every pregnancy is different). What effect can this have on my baby besides weight gain. . .? I have been told that usually after your pregnancy ends so does the gestational diabetes. . .but I have been told that once you have gestational diabetes. . .that you have a greater chance of having a type of diabetes, which really scares me!
