What are the signs of gestational diabetes?

I have a routine where I eat break fast everyday around 9 am, I have always done this and then I eat again at 1.30ish. This has never caused me any problems at all, I have always been very healthy and full of energy.

Now I am pregnant I find that if I wait this long to eat I keep on feeling shaky and almost like I am about ready to faint. I never ever had these feelings before I got pregnant, so now I am worried that I am developing diabetes during my pregnancy.

My mum keeps telling me how much a baby eats and how my son/daughter needs me to eat more so they can grow properly. How often do I need to be eating and should I change what I eat, I have always eaten pretty well. I am quite health conscious and I do want to make sure I give my baby all the nutrients they need but I don’t want to eat just for the sake of it.

I know I can go and ask the Dr to test me for gestational diabetes, but that is just more money out of pocket and if I am not becoming diabetic I will feel silly. So what can I do at home to be able to work out if I should go and get tested?
